Haley Reinhart Brings Vintage Soul to a Charlotte Night at Middle C Jazz

Photo story · Middle C Jazz · October 22, 2026

Blue light, red gloves and a microphone held close: the photographs from Haley Reinhart’s Charlotte appearance tell their own story. One frame catches a small, open-handed gesture; another opens out to raised arms, the band behind her and the audience gathered at tables in front of the stage.

Reinhart brought her Promise Tour to Middle C Jazz on Thursday, October 22. Scott Jelleyman’s photographs, first shared by A&J Creative Photography on social media, bring that Charlotte night into focus here in a longer photo feature.

A voice with more than one chapter

For many listeners, Reinhart’s story begins with American Idol: she finished third in the show’s tenth season in 2011. The years since have produced a catalog that reaches beyond that introduction. Her albums include Listen Up!, Better, What’s That Sound? and the independently released Lo-Fi Soul, followed by the Off The Ground EP in 2022.

Those releases sit alongside a parallel life as an interpreter. Her recording of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” introduced her to another audience, while her work with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox includes a jazz treatment of Radiohead’s “Creep.” These are useful ways into her music, rather than a claim about the songs performed in Charlotte.

Middle C’s artist spotlight traces her musical grounding to family performances and school jazz-band experience. That background helps explain why jazz, soul, rock and pop all belong in a conversation about her work. The Promise Tour, the venue’s announcement notes, also places her newer independent music alongside that established catalog.

The performance, frame by frame

The visual language of this show is unmistakable. Long red gloves contrast with a pale green bodice and a pink skirt; the cool light across the curtain gives the warmer colors somewhere to land. In the wider photographs, the venue’s illuminated sign and the silhouettes of seated listeners make the setting part of the picture.

The tighter frames draw attention to changing expressions and gestures. Reinhart turns toward the room with one palm raised, then faces the microphone with her eyes closed. A photograph cannot reproduce a vocal phrase, but it can preserve the physical detail surrounding it—the hand, the posture, the distance to the band.

A Charlotte night worth keeping

There is a place in Charlotte’s music coverage for both the arena-wide view and the room-sized one. Here, tables sit close to the stage, musicians share the frame, and the photographs keep returning to the person at the microphone. That is the perspective this series offers: a closer look at a touring artist during one night in the Queen City.
