A New Stage for Uptown: Bank of America Stadium’s Next Chapter

Charlotte development · Music & culture

There is a familiar rhythm to a big night in Uptown: dinner before the doors open, crowds making their way toward the lights, and one last stop after the encore. The plans taking shape around Bank of America Stadium could give Charlotte more reasons to make that trip.

The stadium’s renovation is moving forward with a total project investment of more than $1.3 billion, according to Tepper Sports & Entertainment’s July announcement. Alongside the stadium upgrades, a planned 4,400-capacity indoor entertainment venue puts live music at the center of the conversation.

The part music fans should watch

Charlotte Center City Partners’ project listing places the proposed venue beside the stadium’s North Gate at 800 S. Mint Street. It describes a roughly 90,000-square-foot building intended to help fill a gap in Charlotte’s venue capacities. TSE’s announcement anticipates 80 to 100 events a year.

For concertgoers, the appeal is easy to understand. A room at that scale offers a different kind of night from a stadium show: a chance to see a substantial touring production in a smaller setting. The eventual artist lineup, ticket prices and room configuration will matter more than a rendering, but another place for touring acts to land is worth watching.

It also raises an interesting question for Uptown. Could this stretch become somewhere people visit regularly for music, rather than primarily circling dates for the biggest games and outdoor shows? That is the possibility behind the project, and the part that gives it a place in Charlotte’s cultural story.

What is changing inside the stadium?

The announced improvements include larger video displays, expanded gathering areas, more food and retail choices, additional restroom capacity and changes to seating and premium spaces. A planned social patio on the 500 level would face the Uptown skyline. Outside, the designs include an illuminated crown.

The Panthers have published an official gallery of the stadium renderings. Those images show the proposed design; they are not photographs of completed construction. Readers can also follow the official renovation hub for project information.

The timeline: a phased build

TSE says interior work is taking place in 2026, with the improvements fans will see beginning in 2027. Construction is being phased so the Panthers and Charlotte FC can continue playing at the stadium.

WSOC’s reporting, published by Yahoo Sports, puts overall completion in 2030 and the music venue’s projected opening in 2029 or 2030. Those are planning targets, not a confirmed opening-night announcement. The same report notes that concerts and other outside events at the stadium may be reduced during construction.

Who is paying?

The City of Charlotte’s contribution remains fixed at $650 million. TSE says its increased private investment supports the expanded scope and that it will cover potential overruns and ongoing maintenance obligations under the agreement.

The city’s original funding explanation identifies the Convention Center Fund, supported by hotel and prepared food and beverage taxes, as the public funding source. That 2024 page provides background on the proposal; the July 2026 TSE announcement describes the expanded project.

Charlotte’s next nights out

For now, the useful distinction is between what has been announced and what audiences can actually book. A planned venue gives Charlotte something to anticipate. Its calendar, sound, sightlines and experience will eventually tell the fuller story.
