Beyond the Screen: Inside Charlotte’s Independent Picture House

By Scott Jelleyman, Editor, Queen City Backstage

A film with a live score. A community program centered on disability. A twentieth-anniversary return to Marie Antoinette. At Charlotte’s Independent Picture House, the October calendar offers several reasons to make moviegoing a shared experience.

The nonprofit cinema at 4237 Raleigh Street gives independent, international and arthouse films a place alongside conversations and special screenings. For readers who usually plan their evenings around a concert or play, it offers another way into Charlotte’s cultural life.

A Film Society Finds a Home

The Charlotte Film Society was founded in 1982 and opened Independent Picture House in June 2022. The organization also operates the Charlotte Film Festival. Its mission centers on communal experiences through cinema and the connections those experiences can create.

That history gives the venue a role beyond a rotating list of releases. A local cinema can introduce audiences to work they did not know to seek out, then give them somewhere to encounter it together. The range of IPH’s programming makes that invitation concrete.

A Weekend That Goes Beyond a Regular Screening

The official calendar lists Community Impact Film Series: Visible & Invisible Disabilities on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The same day includes the Charlotte Film Festival’s audience award-winning short films and a centennial screening of Faust with a live score.

Those listings offer different starting points: a community-focused program, a selection of festival shorts, or the meeting of film and live music. Consult each event’s listing for its description, start time, admission and any participation details before choosing a screening.

Looking Ahead: October 22–24

I Know Catherine, the Log Lady is listed on October 22, with additional dates later that week. Twentieth-anniversary screenings of Marie Antoinette begin October 23, alongside Making Marie Antoinette. Kwaidan appears on the October 24 calendar.

The mix is a useful reason to browse by more than one familiar title. A documentary, an anniversary screening and a film outside your usual watchlist can each offer a different kind of night out.
