Charlotte Ballet’s Black Box Series Brings the Story Closer

There is something compelling about seeing dance in a room where the stage feels close enough to touch. Charlotte Ballet’s Black Box Series opens October 2 at the Center for Dance, with performances continuing through October 17. It gives the start of the company’s season an intimate setting and a program built around three distinct choreographic voices.

Movement with a story

Mthuthuzeli November’s From Africa With Love returns alongside Dos y Dos y Dos, the first work Artistic Director Alejandro Cerrudo created for Charlotte Ballet. A new piece by German American duo FLOCK completes the evening, drawing on the phoenix and the human impulse to tell stories. Together, those choices offer a way into contemporary ballet through rhythm, memory and imagination.

A different Charlotte theater experience

The Center for Dance’s 197-seat black box brings audiences into a smaller space than a traditional grand theater. For anyone curious about contemporary dance, that scale makes this an appealing entry point into the city’s performing arts season.
