Carolina Clay Matters Puts Charlotte’s Ceramic Artists Within Reach
A handmade cup can begin a conversation about much more than coffee: the shape of its handle, the weight of the clay, or how its surface changed in the kiln. On Saturday, October 10, Carolina Clay Matters’ Fall Pottery Festival offers a place to start those conversations with local makers.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 8300 Monroe Road. The guild’s dedicated festival page lists free admission and parking, with food vendors, coffee, flowers and live music accompanying the ceramics. See the festival information. (https://www.carolinaclaymatters.org/festival)
More than 80 artists from the greater Charlotte area are expected, including established potters and emerging ceramicists. The event listing describes a mix of useful household pieces, jewelry, and work for walls and gardens. That range makes the festival relevant to someone seeking an everyday object as well as a visitor looking for a distinctive piece of art. View the event and free RSVP page. Give yourself room to compare the work. Notice how different makers approach a similar form, and ask about care before choosing something for regular use. A piece intended for display may call for different handling than one made for the dinner table.
For Charlotte’s creative calendar, the festival offers a direct encounter with the people behind the objects—and an opportunity to bring a little of that work home.
